Spellbinding Beauty – Trip Along Lake Geneva

Our trip along Lake Geneva was unexpected in many ways.

More than six months prior, we had stumbled across an advertising campaign from Scandinavian Airlines and managed to secure low-fare roundtrip tickets which, in fact, turned out to be cheaper than our first proper meal in Geneva.

Besides, the weather was quite unpredictable during our visit. On the day of our trip along the lake, the weather was beautiful though. And that ultimately reflects on our entire experience of visiting Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux.

Free public transportation

We flew in from Copenhagen. On the plane we heard some fellow travellers talking about free tickets for public transportation which, apparently, any arriving passenger can get at Geneva Airport. So when we had collected our baggage we went straight for the ticket machine to collect our free tickets covering public travel from the airport for a period of up to 80 minutes, which was more than enough for us since our hotel in Geneva City Centre was just one stop or 10 minutes away.

Upon check-in at the hotel, like in most European cities, we were told to pay tourist tax. Unlike any other city we have visited, though, the hotel clerk then handed us two Geneva Transport Cards, which are basically vouchers, valid for the entirety of our stay and covering all public buses, trains and boats in Geneva. That was a great surprise!

Expensive food, small selection

Before heading to Geneva, a friend of ours had recommended trying the famous steak menu at Cafe de Paris. And while the food was indeed worthy of praise, the price was shocking. Especially considering this was, supposedly, a medium priced restaurant. Compared to the price of our plane tickets, we felt that it was quite expensive.

So ironically, to get a more reasonable price, after the steak, of all places, we went to Starbucks for coffee and felt instantly more comfortable, which is a good indication of just how crazy prices are in a proper restaurant.

With the exception of the last evening, which we spent in a local Thai restaurant not far from our hotel, for the rest of our stay we often ended up having a quick bite from a Coop Restaurant or Migros Take Away which equals unpretentious food at affordable prices. Now we could breathe easily.

Learn about watchmaking and enamelling at Patek Philippe Museum

Switzerland is known as one of the foremost manufacturers of high-end watches in the world. In that regard we were quite lucky with our schedule, since we happened to be in the city on a weekend and the Patek Philippe Museum had free entrance on Saturdays. In the museum we learned about the history of watchmaking and enamelling and saw an extraordinary collection of watchmaking masterpieces dating from the 16th to the 20th century. The museums features made-to-order watches and clocks of royals and aristocracies from Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including King Rama V of Siam. As you may well know, Siam is the former name of Thailand.

Taking a day trip to Montreux and Lausanne is highly recommended

Running late on a beautiful sunny morning at Geneva Central Station, we politely asked to skip the line at the ticket counter as we were about to miss our train. We boarded the train in the knick in time with return tickets to Montreux via Lausanne, including discount tickets for Chillon Castle and public transportation in and around Montreux.

When we arrived at Montreux Station we followed the other tourists to the bus stop and waited for the bus to take us to Chillon Castle. Before entering the castle, we took time to take pictures of the spectacular scenery from the outside. We probably spent a good 2-3 hours at the castle before returning to the city centre.

Back in Montreux main square we grabbed a quick bite before heading to the Queen Studio Experience which was of particular importance to my boyfriend since he is a big Queen fan. Overlooking Lake Geneva, the Queen Studio Experience is in fact the band’s original studio which has now been transformed into a museum commemorating the legacy of the group and its charismatic lead singer, Freddie Mercury. It was great fun for me to produce my own versions of Queen’s songs at the studio.

Late in the afternoon we took a train from Montreux to Lausanne. In Lausanne we switched to the subway and got off 1-2 km from Denantou Park where the Olympic Museum is located. When we stepped off the subway we quickly noticed a surprising number of Thai tourists walking along the lake. Most likely, they were on their way back from the Thai Pavilion, a historic monument of friendship erected as a respectful gesture by subjects of the late King Rama IX of Thailand, inside Denantou Park. We made a quick visit to the pavilion before walking back to the Olympic Museum.

Bring back experiences, not souvenirs

We went to most of the tourist attractions in Geneva, such as Jet d’Eau — the huge fountain on the lake — the UN district and the main shopping streets. Aside from memories (and pictures), we didn’t bring anything back with us, but we had a lot of great experiences. The more I think about it, that’s probably the way we prefer to travel.
