Over the past few years in Copenhagen, the recreation of medieval markets has increased tremendously in popularity. The romance of escaping, at least for a few hours, from the stress-filled, work-a-day world can be very attractive and a lot of fun.
The Middle Ages is the period between 1066, when the Normans conquered England, and 1450, when the Renaissance and the rise of the nation-state brought an end to the feudal system that dominated the period. Moreover, many Danes are into the Northern European and Scandinavian history. Thus, the Copenhagen medieval markets is also included Vikings Age, which is the period from 800 until the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Basically, this gives us six and a half centuries to play with.
The more we see of this long-gone age, recreated by people who are just like the rest of us, the more it seems like a great way to spend some free time. It is even more fun to take part in one of these medieval events than it is to attend them purely as a spectator. We believed that no single element will add more to the authenticity of the medical event than attractive costumes. Once we have costumes, we become repeat visitors at the medieval market 🙂
